As you may or may not know, employers in specific cities (including the Big Apple) are no longer permitted to ask you for your current salary during the interview process (Hooray!).  There are a myriad of reasons for this, regardless, you need to seriously think about your strategy when that question pops up during your interview.   Oh, and what if it does come up, are you prepared with the proper response.  Feel free to contact us if you don’t have one.

The days (in those cities) are over where a future employer will handcuff you to your present salary while calculating what they’re planning on offering you; a huge benefit to the job seeker who sincerely feels underpaid.

So what does this mean in terms addressing your salary requirements during an interview?   Yes, you can ask for the sky, what the heck, however if you don’t back up your desired compensation during your interview by generating “perceived value” you just might price yourself out of an offer.  Know your self-worth, know your market, know your value, keep relevant, keep your skills current and make sure you get what you deserve.
